there also the option of signing up for off road school... just like they have track instruction, they have wheeling instruction as well ;)
Also good to travel with a few other more experienced off road truck buddies with a tow hook in case anything happens.
best thing for anyone to do is to read up on forums from experienced people. It's a wealth of information.

Yes, knowledge is important and getting it right from the source is the best way, at least for the fundamentals the rest is just knowing your vehicle and its limitations well enough.
Read one of the comments about choosing a vehicle with a short wheelbase to avoid bellying out on humps.
All depends where you want to go and what you're willing to do. Some people that need the longer wheelbase will end up getting lift kits. If your needs are minimal... short wheel base is it.
