Toyota is planning to bring a concept FT-4X to next month’s New York International Auto Show. So far, all we have is a picture of a beefy wheel from the concept car and it looks like the Future Toyota (FT) could be competition for the new Wrangler and Bronco.

Well its the FJ Cruiser successor so it will be better by default, maybe not from certain aspects like not being truck based but aside from that it will be good on the current industrys standards. Been very pleased with Toyota products so far, this will be a treat, still not enough to kill my Wrangler loyalty

It's going to be a shootout between Jeep and Toyota when it comes to off-road capable vehicles. Really depends on the FT-4X specs and it'll take the Bronco's place as the main competition for the JL.

Both still have their own unique spot in the market so im not sure how much of a shootout that will be otherwise it would of happened by now. Although Toyota has a lot of experience with offroad, the Wrangler established a lot in recent times, more than an FJ or anything like it.

There's really not too much competition as they'll appeal to different buyers. The Toyota FT-4X will probably be scooped up by those who want some off road capability and good reliability. The Wrangler will still hold the off-road title.

Well, no direct competition.
Anyone who has been around the wrangler community long enough or know a thing or two about it will see what the rivals are. Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner are just a couple.

All depends on what you want.

That makes me think of a beefier version of the Jeep Renegade, but if it really does look similar to the concept and it can perform off road then the JL may have some competition from the FT-4X. There's plenty of ground clearance and the overall design looks off-road ready.

The Toyota FT-4X is supposed to appear at the New York auto show and it is rumored to take after the RAV4. But this is purely speculation since Toyota has not leaked anything about the FT-4X at all, for all we know it could look like this third party rendering.

Now those are two completely different designs in mind. If it's Rav4 like the one above, there is no chance at aiming that at a Wrangler and succeeding. If it's the first one (concept) they may well be able to stand a good chance but only if it can play the part.

Not only that but they are in different segments, no relation, maybe they will share steering wheels and steering racks but not a lot of what we're seeing. Might as compare the Compass to Wrangler while we're at it. Compass vs Rav4 is more like it.

We'll know what it looks like soon at the New York auto show. Maybe it'll make those who are loyal to the Japanese brand interested in the off-road segment.
Japanese brands have done well across the world in off-roading now this might be the first real shift for them in North America to take on Jeep and the like.

Toyota just better not drop the ball on this one, by making it look some of the part and not all the way.
