My guess is that since they're forced to have a 3rd brake light by law they'll find a way to incorporate it into the mount. This might mean the brake light is closer to the face of the tire though.
The more I think of it, the more I realize how much of a headache that spare tire makes in terms of finding a "good" location. In pickups they're able to put it by the tailgate handle which gives a great view of the hitch and the area behind the truck.
That's it... we need to have them put a backup camera in each taillight housing and having computer software stitch the images together into one image. *problem solved*
