Wrangler JL Getting A Backup Camera

Autoblog has some new spyshots and one of them is a zoomed in picture of the JL's backup camera. The camera looks like it's sticking out from the middle of the spare tire? Not sure how well that would work with it jutting out so much.

Once a wheel is mounted on the back it shouldn't look as bad (see picture below)

I want to say they could have mounted it else where, but thinking about all a camera like this needs to capture, it couldn't get any better than this.

That rear mounted wheel has a solid center and nowhere for the camera to poke out from. That's the general design of most spare tires, but maybe that means the JL wheels will be hollow in the center?
My guess is that since they're forced to have a 3rd brake light by law they'll find a way to incorporate it into the mount. This might mean the brake light is closer to the face of the tire though.

The more I think of it, the more I realize how much of a headache that spare tire makes in terms of finding a "good" location. In pickups they're able to put it by the tailgate handle which gives a great view of the hitch and the area behind the truck.

That's it... we need to have them put a backup camera in each taillight housing and having computer software stitch the images together into one image. *problem solved* :)

Some aftermarket systems have a camera poking out between the spokes and that is a much better way to go about this especially if you happen to need that spare:

Would like to see something mounted lower like in the bumper but from a cost perspective its not as easy as the above...

The second camera mount you've posted looks like a cleaner location for it, but putting it inside the tailgate like that may cost too much. I guess it makes sense to mount it higher up so it's not blocked off by any trailers you plan to tow with the JL.

Not really since there's a lot of preexisting holes and so on they can use for mounting it. If anything the only real concern is someone unscrewing the backup camera setup. But i'm not worried about that.

Whatever we get is a bonus and quite frankly with the design changes happening throughout the industry that's making viability worse, we have it GOOD.
It's hard to unscrew the spare tire if you lock it down enough, then they'll be able to get at the camera, but I'll be darned if I make it easy for anyone!
